Are you curious about how the body defends itself against infections and tumours? The course in immunology provides you with a fundamental understanding of how the immune system works and how it can be used to develop new medicines.
Overview
In this course, you will learn about the various components and processes that make up the immune system. You will gain an in-depth understanding of how the immune system protects us against pathogens and tumours, as well as what happens when it malfunctions, leading to allergies and autoimmune diseases. Immunology is one of the most active research areas in life sciences and is crucial for many applied research fields, such as drug development.
Teaching and learning
The teaching consists of lectures and group seminars where you will learn about both innate and adaptive immunity, and the interaction between hosts and pathogens. You will also gain knowledge about autoimmunity, allergies, vaccination, and the evolution of the immune system. The course includes several laboratory practicals in which you will be trained in immunological techniques such as flow cytometry and ELISA. Additionally, there is a literature project where you will write a review on a specific topic in immunology and present it at a seminar.
Examination takes place in the form of a written examination at the end of the course and by exercises, seminars, laboratory work and project work during the course.
