Do you want to explore how microorganisms shape our world and help tackle major global challenges like antibiotic resistance, the energy crisis and climate change? This course introduces a fast-evolving field that is central to the future of biology.

Overview

This course offers a broad and in-depth introduction to modern microbiology. You will explore the diversity of microorganisms and their importance in both environmental and industrial contexts. Topics include microbial physiology, diversity, medical microbiology and applied microbiology.

You will examine the structure and function of prokaryotic cells and gain insight into the remarkable metabolic diversity of microorganisms. This knowledge helps explain their roles in global cycles and their potential in industrial and environmental applications.

Microbiology plays a key role in addressing some of today’s most urgent issues – from antibiotic resistance and sustainable food production to pollution and climate change. With these skills, you will be well-prepared for a career in research, industry or environmental work, where microbiological expertise is in high demand.

 

Teaching and learning

Teaching combines lectures, interactive seminars, lab work and a group project. You will gain hands-on experience with microbiological methods and lab techniques through regular practical sessions and a course-long project. Working in small groups, you will develop skills such as general lab practice and project planning.

Theoretical content is delivered through lectures and problem-solving seminars. Early sessions build your foundation for later weeks, where you will explore current topics in microbiology. One week focuses on medical microbiology, including bacterial toxins, antibiotics and resistance. Other parts of the course cover microbial metabolism, and during the project you will apply your knowledge to study microorganisms in natural environments. 

Examination takes place through a written examination at the end of the course, as well as through participation in seminars and written laboratory reports, written assignments and project report during the course.

You will also learn about industrial, agricultural and biotechnological applications of microbiology.
